Gregoire vetoes child care funding, mental health counselors

In a surprise move, Gov. Christine Gregoire Tuesday used her red pen on the state higher education budget more than any governor in memory, marking out more than $1 million in child care supplemental budget funding pushed through the Legislature last month by university student lobbyists.

Enhanced funding for the university "stars" research program and authorization for $1.5 million more in scheduled fee increases was contained in a compromise legislative budgets announced today. Core computing and Veterinary Medical Research Building were not funded.

Senate boosts "Stars," funds Core Computing request

Additional funding for the "Stars" program and moneys to plan a replacement for WSU core computing systems highlights a proposed operating budget proposal that has passed the state Senate this week. WSU supports the Senate version of the operating budget and the House version of the capital budget.

State House budget contained a surprise cut to the state research universities, slicing more than $1.5 million for a program that was designed to recruit and start a new bioproducts researcher at WSU Tri-Cities. Updates on other budget issues and student collective bargaining as well.

Governor funds security upgrades

About $1.8 million in campus security improvements will be made at Washington State University by a 2008 supplemental budget proposal announced this week by Gov. Christine Gregoire. No funding was included for the core computer systems feasibility study, Global Animal Health and Agriculture, or Veterinary Medical Research Building.
